Man V Fat

November 6, 2019
So many improvements, not just weight loss.

After 7 weeks of competition, we have 46 men participating in Man V Fat at STARplex whom have lost a combined 196.4 kg!

Our participant with the largest weight loss, John Crawford, is currently sitting at 15.9 kg lost since registration night in September- which is 14.44% loss of body weight.

John Crawford, Fatalaide United – Current weight loss leader

I have been doing Man Vs Fat for about six weeks now and have lost 12kg. The great thing it has over other fitness and weight loss programs is the support of your teammates and the accountability factor. A common theme with men is that they would happily do something for someone else, but will rarely doing something for themselves. Man Vs Fat utilises that perfectly – you work hard during the week to meet your exercise targets and stick to your food plan because you don’t want to let your team down. You keep in touch with teammates through WhatsApp to share tips and successes, and sometimes failures, but always work to improve as a group. Weekly weigh ins are a great way to keep yourself accountable and your team is always there for support whether you lose or happen to gain. The camaraderie between players – even those on other teams – is really strong and the entire community genuinely wants to see everyone succeed. The games are great fun, very relaxed and everyone is just there to have a run, plus it’s a great way to work up a sweat. One of the best things has been seeing how fast the guys have improved their fitness and skill levels. In just a handful of games everyone has trimmed down and some guys have turned into absolute stars on the court! If you want to try something different, have fun, meet some great blokes and actually enjoy losing weight, Man Vs Fat is the way to go.

Chris Martin, KFC Barfalona.

I’ve lost 9kg over the first 5 weeks, which is . I’ve learnt to eat more healthy meals, and also to eat more regularly as I was struggling with this before starting. I was a bit nervous because I haven’t played soccer before and you don’t know what to expect from your team having not met them, but we’ve bonded really well and become good friends. I’d say to potential participants if you’re feeling a bit nervous, come and give it a go. No one judges you because we are all here for the same thing. Everyone is very supportive and we all want to see each other succeed.

Peter Ryan, Green Kegs & Ham.

I have lost 8.8kg so far. Man v fat is a great program. I was nervous about my soccer playing ability having not played before, but have found everyone in the program very supportive.  The team environment and the off-field goals for weight loss was just the motivation I needed to start losing weight and becoming healthier.

Outside of weight loss, fitness levels have increased dramatically. Many men could barely run out one game in week one. Now these same men are asking to fill in for a second game if there is a spot free. But the biggest difference trainer Daniel has noticed since week 1 is the confidence levels. Many men were quiet and nervous, all men are now speaking up and offering advice to others, even if they are not on the same team. ‘It is great to see the joy and personalities evolve as more weight comes off on the scales.’ Some teams are meeting up for a weekly soccer training session, Other teams are aiming to meet up for events like Parkrun or bushwalking.

We are getting more registrations week by week, a lot of which have been coming from the men themselves, as they have been spreading how much they are enjoying it to friends and family.

‘MAN v FAT Soccer’ is a Community-based Weight Loss Initiative for Overweight and Obese Men in Australia. Our MAN v FAT Soccer Program assists men to lose weight in a social, fun environment; promoting exercise, healthy eating, and lifestyle changes with an element of competition. Players are supported to lose weight (through diet and physical activity change) by the league coach, their teammates, the forums (24/7 support), and the Player Handbook. Every week players weigh in and play a 28-minute game of 6-a-side Soccer. Individuals register to participate in the MAN v FAT Soccer Program and are assigned to teams. Individuals can request to be in a team (i.e., ‘pair themselves’) with a colleague/friend during the registration process.
