Turn it UP!

September 21 2011, by Paul Pearce, STARplex Fitness Centre Manager

WHEN IT COMES TO HARD WORK THERE ARE THREE KINDS OF PEOPLE.

SOME TURN UP THEIR SLEEVES, SOME TURN UP THEIR NOSES AND THERE’S SOME THAT DON’T EVEN TURN UP AT ALL. I prefer the sleeve turners, the one’s that “dig in” and scream “hell yeah” when the task becomes all the more difficult. These people wear the sweat on their head like a crown of achievement. They are the ones we applaud. They are the heroes that “box on” and leave nothing in the tank. To be one of these people you not only have to “step up” but turn it up!

We would all love to have this measure of commitment. Basically, it comes down to planning and following through, plus a good measure of determination.

Success is built upon a platform of hard work. What looks easy for some is the result of countless hours of preparation and often, mistakes!

Your first step in any goal is to plan using a diary. Write down what it is you wish to achieve and look at it daily. The goal should be highly desirable otherwise you are doomed from the beginning.

I use a diary with all my personal training clients as it provides focus.

All of us lead busy lives. Prepare for any interruptions beforehand by “flagging” them in your diary. Obstacles are inevitable; however planning around them makes them more of an inconvenience, rather than a barrier.

Setting “targets” along the way is essential to reaching your goal. These are mini achievements related to your goal and help you to stay focused. For example, if my goal was to lose 10kgs in 8 weeks a “target” might be accomplishing a 6km run by week 4 of your “journey”. Achieving little “successes” not only makes the goal more attainable but can help you set new ones!
